9th Bombardment Division Martin B-26 Marauders scoring direct hits on the "Kronprinz Wilhelm" railroad bridge over the Rhine river at Engers, Germany, as part of a widespread and coordinated attack aimed at the disruption of German railway communication. The attackes damaged the main structure and approaches of this important rail communications link for the movement of supplies and troops to the Western Front. The bridge, supporting the double track links on the Koln-Mainz route, is an eight span iran, steel and masonry structure extending 1237 feet. Previously damaged by the 9th's medium bombers, the bridge had been recently repaired.
